The Raman Lidar (RL) is an active, ground-based laser remote sensing instrument. It makes measurements of both elastically and inelastically (Raman) scattered radiation at 354.7nm. The elastic scattering signals provide information on clouds and aerosols. Measurements of Raman scattering from water vapor and nitrogen provide water vapor mixing ratio profiles. In Raman scattering the frequency of scattered radiation is changed as a result of the interaction of the photon with the energy levels of the molecules. The frequency change is a characteristic of the scattering molecule, which makes it possible to analyze data precisely. This system is fully automated through a personal computer.

Holmarc has manufactured optics, opto-mechanics and control electronics for Raman LIDAR. The optics include 350mm diameter parabolic mirror as per the design provided by the client. Custom opto-mechanics for fixing and aligning primary mirror and secondary mirror were made at Holmarc in addition to opto-mechanical systems for signal separation and analysis. Computer interfaced angular scanning system for the entire assembly has also been developed for the project.

Holmarc also manufactured and supplied UV compatible fused silica lenses for this
LIDAR. UV enhanced aluminium coatings for primary and secondary mirrors have
been done at our thin film coating lab

Telescope
The telescope mirrors have UV enhanced Al coating to provide better reflection in UV range.
Main mirror diameter : 0.35 m
Focal length : 1 m
Telescope geometry : Newtonian
Holmarc participated in construction of optics and opto-mechanics for this instrument. The design is a proprietary property of our customer and the instrument is not available for sale from Holmarc. It is described to highlight our capabilities in customization.
