The Electrochemical Discharge Machining (ECDM) is a non-conducting machining process which combines the features of Electric Discharge Machining (EDM) and Electrochemical Machining (ECM). The material is removed by thermal melting and chemical dissolution. Both conductive and non-conductive materials can be machined. The discharge occurs between the positively polarized tool electrode and the negatively polarized auxiliary electrode immersed in an electrolyte bath along with the work piece.

The system consists of an XYZ stage with CNC controller, a rotating tool holder with carbon brush contact for supplying the electric potential to the tool, an additional Z stage for continuously adjusting the gap between the tool and the work piece, a tank for keeping the electrolyte and the work piece and a 300V power supply to produce the discharge.
